Frequently asked questions and help

FAQ

How does ProximityPulse work?

ProximityPulse uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct to discover and communicate with people nearby. Messages travel directly from your device to theirs — no internet or servers are involved.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. ProximityPulse works completely offline. You only need Bluetooth enabled on your device. Wi-Fi can be on or off — the app uses Wi-Fi Direct which doesn't require a router or internet connection.

How close do I need to be?

Bluetooth has a typical range of about 10-30 meters (30-100 feet). Wi-Fi Direct can reach further. The range depends on the environment — walls and obstacles may reduce it.

Are my messages private?

Yes. Messages are sent directly between devices with no servers in between. There is no cloud storage, no way for anyone else to read your messages, and messages can be set to auto-delete. The app collects only anonymous usage analytics — never message content or personal information.

Why can't I see anyone nearby?

Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your device and that you've granted Bluetooth permission to the app. The other person also needs to have ProximityPulse open with Bluetooth enabled. Try moving closer together.

Can I receive messages in the background?

Yes. ProximityPulse uses Bluetooth Low Energy to keep you reachable even when the app is in the background. You'll receive a notification when a new message arrives.

How do I delete my messages?

Messages auto-delete based on your TTL (Time-To-Live) setting in Settings. You can also manually delete all messages from Settings > Delete all messages.

How do I block someone?

In the chat view, you can block or mute any peer. Blocked peers won't be able to send you messages, and they will no longer appear in your Nearby list.

Does ProximityPulse collect any data?

ProximityPulse collects anonymous usage analytics (such as app opens and feature usage) via Firebase Analytics to help us improve the app. No message content, display names, or personally identifiable information is ever collected. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
